Sermon Title: The Surprising Thing To Do

If the Christian Thing To Do isn't what we think.. what is it? To be a Christian is to be a noun. It isn't an adjective. Yet so often our description of "Christian things" have more to do with cultural moral issues than Biblical commands.

Sermon Points and Questions

1. What kind of "Christian" things have let you down in the past? How do you understand the situation when this happens?

2. How do you think Matthew 25:31-46 applies to your life? What if you don't give people free drinks or clothes or care for the sick or visit in prison? What is going on in this section of Scripture?

3. Can you only do the Christian thing to do 25% of the time and still be a Christian?

4. Why do you think people are so quick to lash out at people or organizations/things that claim to be Christian but don't live up to their standards of what Chirstian things should be like?

5. Have you ever thought about the point of "removing someone from the church? (Like in 1 Cor 5). How does the heart behind this action change your understanding of why this is a practice Paul commands for the church?

6. Does your list of the "Christian thing to do" look a lot like your ideal life? If so, how do some of the things Kevin ended the sermon with today change your perspective on what Christians should do?

7. Why do you think people in general (Christians and non christians) seem to be more concerned about certain issues than they do with some of the most basic commands in the Bible for Christians to live out?

8. Is there something Christians, or people/things who claim to be Christians, have done that is preventing you from embracing following Jesus all the way?

Matthew 25:31-46 NLT

The Final Judgment

31 “But when the Son of Man[d] comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations[e] will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[f] you were doing it to me!’

41 “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.[g] 42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’

45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”

1 Corinthians 5:1-5 NLT

5 I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.[a] 2 You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.

3 Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit.[b] And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this man 4 in the name of the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church.[c] I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus. 5 Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed[d] and he himself[e] will be saved on the day the Lord[f] returns.
