Sermon Title: Developing Character
Skills might help you rise up the ladder, but character will keep you there. Who you are as a person will greatly influence your ability to influence others. We all need to ask the question, "what is it like being on the other side of me?"
Sermon Points and Questions
1. Why do you think we see "so many" leaders around us fall?
2. Skills might help you level up… but Character keeps you there.
3. What is unique about the church that makes it the best place on the planet to develop your character?
4. What is it like being on the other side of me?
5. Who are you imitating? Who is imitating you?
6. Have you ever had someone try to mentor you but you turned them away because you didn't really get what was happening?
7. What is one characteristic from 1 Timothy 3 that you think God is developing inside of you?
Action Steps:
1. Who is one person you can invite to spend some time with you?
2. If someone invites you to spend time with you.. say yes!
1Corinthians 4:14-17 NKJV
14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.
2 Timothy 1:5 NLT
2 Timothy 1:5 - 5 I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.
1 Timothy 3:1-7 NLT
3 This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be a church leader,[a] he desires an honorable position.” 2 So a church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife.[b] He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach. 3 He must not be a heavy drinker[c] or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money. 4 He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him. 5 For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?
6 A church leader must not be a new believer, because he might become proud, and the devil would cause him to fall.[d] 7 Also, people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will not be disgraced and fall into the devil’s trap.
